The book of Ruth is a story of love and dedication. When Ruth is widowed, she pledges to remain with her widowed mother-in-law, Naomi, even though it means a life of poverty. Ruth is hard working and provides for them by gleaning during the barley harvest in the fields of Boaz. As the story develops, Boaz marries Ruth, which provides for her and Naomi. But there is more to the story!
Ruth 4:13 says, “So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. Then he went to her, and the LORD enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.” (NIV) Everyone celebrated that birth! The neighbors said that Ruth was better than seven sons, which was very high praise! The baby was named Obed.
But the story does not end there. Obed became the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David. That’s right, David, the man who killed Goliath. David, the king of Israel. But more importantly, David, the ancestor of Jesus. Dedicated, hard-working Ruth, a foreign woman, was an ancestor of Jesus.
But Ruth had no clue about this fact. She simply loved people and followed God. Likewise, we have no clue what God will do in the future because we have followed him. Like Ruth, we just need to love people and trust God!
