Romans – Sat – 22-03-05

In many sports, aiming is important. This is certainly true in hunting. You have to aim a bow or firearm correctly to succeed. In fact, different devices have been invented to improve aim. These can be as simple as a notch and post on the barrel of the firearm or a variable power telescopic scope. But aim is also important in fishing when casting the lure or bait. Or take basketball. I was taught that my eyes should aim at the back of the rim, not the front.

Success in business also relies on taking aim. We usually refer to it as setting goals or objectives. You set a specific and measurable goal, then align effort and resources to achieve it. As Zig Ziglar once said, “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time.”*

The apostle Paul also understood the importance of aim. In Romans 15:20 he said this, “It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.” (NIV) Did you notice the word ambition? In the original language it contains the concept of aim. It can be translated “It has always been my aim to preach the gospel.”

So, what is the aim of your life? May we all aim at pleasing God and sharing the message of Jesus!
