Song of Ascents – Wed – 23-03-08

Christian in many countries face physical attacks, forced marriages, confiscation of property, loss of jobs, imprisonment and the removal of their children from their care. Persecution is a fact of life for followers of Jesus. In some countries, Christians face brutal treatment. Even in the United States, a country with tremendous freedom, contempt and ridicule is often heaped on people of faith. It goes beyond the mockery of late night comedians. Our increasingly woke culture demands the freedom to declare any sin righteous and pressures people to kowtow to their values.

One of the Songs of Ascents in the book of Psalms seems written for our time. Psalms 123:1-4 says:
“I lift up my eyes to you, to you whose throne is in heaven.
As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master, as the eyes of a maid look to the hand of her mistress, so our eyes look to the LORD our God, till he shows us his mercy.
Have mercy on us, O LORD, have mercy on us, for we have endured much contempt.
We have endured much ridicule from the proud, much contempt from the arrogant.” (NIV 1984)

When we are oppressed like a slave or just treated with contempt, the Psalm teaches us to place trust in God. We need his mercy and his grace. He is the one who can deliver us. Worship him today.
