Believe: Evil – Thu – 21-06-03

On January 6, 2018 a child was rushed to the Tuen Mun Hospital in Hong Kong. The five-year-old girl was unconscious, wearing a diaper. Her body was covered with 130 injuries. She later died. The same day, her eight-year-old brother was sent to a different hospital. He was underweight and covered with about the same number of injuries. He survived. An autopsy of the girl showed she died of septicemia from salmonella and staphylococcus infection. The children had been routinely abused by their father and stepmother for months. They were eventually convicted of murder.*

Do stories of child abuse, like this one, fill you with outrage? Some things are just horribly wrong. Child abuse is one. I’m sure you can think of others as well. Some things are just evil. We know it. Even those who don’t follow Jesus know it. All people everywhere have an inborn sense of fairness. We know some things are evil and some things are good.

This sense of fairness, which results in moral outrage, is proof that good and evil exist. More than that, it is proof that God exists. People often wonder whether God is real when they see all the evil in the world. But if God were not real, we’d never see evil. We’d never agree on evil. Or more importantly, we’d never know good either. Without God there is no definition of good. Even the bad things in this world point us to God.

Believe: Morality – Sun – 21-05-30

Have you ever wondered what it is like to float weightless in space? Imagine the experience of astronauts who have journeyed to the moon or orbited in the space shuttle or International Space Station. It must be so different than life on earth!

Now, take it one step further. Imagine you are floating in a space suit far out in the reaches of the solar system. You are nowhere near Earth, another planet or a space craft. The sun is just another speck of light. You float alone. Now, answer this question: which way is up? Impossible to answer, correct? To us, up is the direction of the sky and down is toward the ground. If you are floating in space, you have no objective reference for up or down.

The same situation exists in determining what is right and wrong. Without an objective reference, we can’t define good or evil. Since we know good and evil exist, there must be a standard. And there is! God is the standard. Our moral nature is a proof for the existence of God. This is the point of a five-minute video by William Lane Craig.* He talks about outer space, up and down, and shows that God exists because good exists. A link can be found in the show notes. Take five minutes and watch.

If you are absolutely convinced that something is good or evil, then you should be convinced God exists.
