Do you like to travel early in the morning, or late at night? I am an early traveler. I’d rather get up a little before the sun if I plan to drive all day. I want to get to my destination before dark. Others I know start their trip later in the day. They’d rather rise rested and drive late into the evening. Even though I like to travel early, I don’t like to start in the middle of the night. On business travel to Asia, I needed to leave the hotel at 1 a.m. to catch a flight leaving at 4 a.m. That was much too early.
I wonder what Joseph and Mary thought about rising in the middle of the night to travel to Egypt. An angel warned Joseph in a dream that Herod wanted to kill Jesus. He woke with a start and rousted Mary. I’m sure the desire to protect baby Jesus from King Herod kept them alert on a long and dark road.
Did you know their sojourn in Egypt was predicted 700 years before they left? Listen to Matthew 2:14-15 which quotes Hosea 11:1, ‘And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, “Out of Egypt I called my son.”’ (NIV)
Again we see details of Jesus’ birth predicted hundreds of years before the event.
