Have you ever been laughed at? I’m not talking about clowning around or telling jokes because you want laughter. I’m talking about people laughing at you in a mocking way. It doesn’t feel good to be laughed at.
Did you know that people laughed at Jesus? Here’s the story from Luke 8:41-43, “Then a man named Jairus, a synagogue leader, came and fell at Jesus’ feet, pleading with him to come to his house because his only daughter, a girl of about twelve, was dying. As Jesus was on his way, the crowds almost crushed him.” (NIV)
Stop and see this scene. Jesus can hardly walk because everyone was pressing in on him. During this time, Jesus actually heals a woman in the crowd – but that’s not the miracle we are focused on. As Jesus and Jairus are working their way to his house, news arrives that the daughter is dead. Jesus told Jairus to have faith. They finally reach the house. We pick up the story in verses 52 and 53 “Meanwhile, all the people were wailing and mourning for her. ‘Stop wailing,’ Jesus said. “She is not dead but asleep.’ They laughed at him, knowing that she was dead.” (NIV)
Even though they laughed at Jesus, he raised the girl from the dead. So, if someone laughs at you because you believe in miracles — like Jesus’ resurrection — have faith anyway! Jesus has power over death!
