Jesus’ Ministry – Wed – 22-04-13

When I worked for a corporation, we developed a succession plan. It looked at the employees in the organization and identified those who could step up into different positions. The idea was, that if I was promoted, then someone could fill my spot. Of course that was true for all the other leaders in the organization as well. Having people ready to step up leads to success.

One of the important events in Jesus’ ministry was the selection of the 12 apostles. Jesus knew he would eventually leave and the birth of the church would rest in their hands. Luke 6:12-16 says, “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God. When morning came, he called his disciples to him and chose twelve of them, whom he also designated apostles: Simon (whom he named Peter), his brother Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alphaeus, Simon who was called the Zealot, Judas son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor.” (NIV)

Notice Jesus spent the night in prayer. He often prayed at night, sometimes for hours. But this is the only time we are specifically told he spent the night praying to God. That shows the importance of selecting the apostles.

This also challenges us to be people of prayer like Jesus was. Spend some time today praying to God!

Jesus’ Prayers – Mon – 22-01-24

Did you ever lose sleep over a big decision? Some decisions have a huge impact on our lives. Should I quit the job? Should I marry this person? Should I move to a new city? Should I buy the house? Should I get the surgery or treatment? Should I retire now? Decisions like these often keep us up at night.

Jesus also faced some big decisions. Luke 6:12-16 tells of one. “One of those days Jesus went out to a mountainside to pray, and spent the night praying to God.

This passage shows how Jesus approached one of his biggest decisions – who to pick to become his apostles. He would pour his life and teaching into these men. Then, he would leave and entrust them with his message for the world. Jesus was up all night before selecting them. But notice, he didn’t simply lose sleep. He didn’t worry and fret. He spent the night on a mountainside praying to God.

The next time you face a big decision, don’t just lose sleep. Climb out of bed and lift the decision to God in prayer.
