Memorials – Sun – 22-05-29

Along the highway near my home is a very small patch of mowed grass. In it a bench sits and flowers bloom. Someone spends time tending this small plot. It is a memorial to a person killed near the spot.  Have you seen something like this? I’ve seen several along the highways of the Midwest. Often they have crosses and nearly always they have flowers.

This is not the only way people create memorials. Some use stickers on the back windshield of their automobile to spell out a name and dates. Others give memorial gifts to charities to honor someone who has died. Unless someone has no friends or family, a memorial service is usually held following their death.

One type of memorial is prominent among Christians. It is the memorial meal. Jesus started it, as Luke 22:17-19 states, ‘After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, “Take this and divide it among you. For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.”’ (NIV)

The Lord’s Supper was started to remember the death of Jesus. Of course, it also reminds us of his resurrection. Don’t miss out gathering with other Christians to remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ in this special way.
