Jude – Mon – 22-07-18

In 1972 the film A Thief in the Night enthralled audiences with its depiction of the sudden disappearance of all Christians at the start of a seven-year tribulation prior to the return of Jesus. The event, called the rapture, has fascinated audiences. Following the film, bumper stickers appeared announcing a car’s driver would disappear at the rapture. An urban legend held that airlines paired Christian pilots with non-Christian pilots so someone could land the plane should the rapture occur. The study of the end times has always been popular, as the sales of the Left Behind book series showed in the 1990s.

Many people look forward, believing the end times will arrive in the future. Maybe they should look back instead. Jude 1:17-18 says, ‘But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.”’ (NIV) In the next verse, Jude indicates that those scoffers were present in the church of his day. And today we still have religious leaders who scoff at Jesus’ miracles, resurrection and divine nature.

That’s why we still need to contend for the faith. We can’t lose the truth about who Jesus is and what he accomplished. The Lord Jesus is our hope. We trust in him knowing the next big event on God’s agenda is his return.
