Many preachers have had a large number of people respond to their message. When you think of someone like this, who comes to mind? Billy Graham? Some other preacher? Did you think of Jonah, the Old Testament prophet?
Listen to his story in Jonah 3:1-6, “Then the word of the LORD came to Jonah a second time: ‘Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.’
Jonah obeyed the word of the LORD and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very important city–a visit required three days. On the first day, Jonah started into the city. He proclaimed: ‘Forty more days and Nineveh will be overturned.’ The Ninevites believed God. They declared a fast, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth.
When the news reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust.” (NIV)
Talk about a large response to a preacher’s message! The city of Nineveh and surrounding suburbs probably contained at least a half a million people, maybe more. The response of the population was so overwhelming, even the king displayed repentance. The city turned from their wickedness and God spared them.
This is an encouraging message for us. We too can turn from wicked disobedience and receive grace from God!
