It must be human nature to run from God. Ever since Adam tried to hide from God in the Garden of Eden, people have tried to run from God in different ways. Some deny his existence. Others simply ignore what he commands. The Old Testament prophet, Jonah, ran by booking passage on a ship to a distant land. But it didn’t work out very well! God sent a storm to get him back on track.
But Jonah still ran from God. He asked to be thrown overboard. He’d rather die than do what God wanted! But he didn’t die. A large marine animal swallowed Jonah. Can’t you just picture him sloshing around in the black belly of the beast? If it were me, I’d want out immediately! But Jonah was there for three days. Finally, he committed himself to obeying God.
Part of his prayer is found in Jonah 2:7-9, “When my life was ebbing away, I remembered you, LORD, and my prayer rose to you, to your holy temple. Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs. But I, with a song of thanksgiving, will sacrifice to you. What I have vowed I will make good. Salvation comes from the LORD.” (NIV)
Whether your life feels like a day in the sun or you’re sloshing in the belly of a beast, commit yourself to obey God!
