James – Sun – 21-12-12

Have you ever scratched your head over the behavior of children? I think most mothers have! I also have distinct memories of my father shaking his head at the behavior of my siblings and me. One thing that puzzles parents is why children fuss and fight with each other. It can be exasperating!

I’ve also scratched my head over the behavior of adults, haven’t you? Why can’t adults get along with each other? Well, we think our arguments are more  important than childish squabbles, right? But, sometimes the arguments of adults are just as childish – and just as exasperating – as the arguments of kids!

The book of James talks about quarrels between adults in James 4:1-3. It says, “What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don’t get it. You kill and covet, but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.” (NIV)

Well, that clears up the mystery of why people argue! We argue because we’re self-centered. We become frustrated when we want something and don’t get it. The next time you find yourself in an argument, stop and make sure you are not being self-centered.
