James – Wed – 21-12-08

Have you ever known someone who talked a good game, but their words didn’t match actions? Maybe it was the new person at school or work. They tried to impress everyone describing their talents or abilities. Then you found out they could not do what they said. I understand there’s a saying in Texas for this. They say that the man who boasts but can’t back it up is “All hat and no cattle.” Other ways to say the same thing include  “all bark and no bite” and “he’s full of big talk.”

If we follow Jesus, we have to be careful. Our faith can’t be all talk. It must be demonstrated by action. That’s what James says in chapter 2 verses 14-17, “What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” (NIV)

Faith is more than believing God exists. It is more than spouting pious words. It goes beyond kind intentions. If faith is alive, it produces action in our lives. Today, may your faith live!
