James – Mon – 21-12-06

“It’s not fair!” Have you ever said that? Most of us learn to say it at an early age. Every human being cares deeply about fairness and justice. Unfortunately, we don’t always understand what fairness is. For many, fairness is whatever they want. That’s how most kids use the term. Someone else has the toy so they lament that it’s not fair.

It takes most people a few years to learn that fairness means treating people the same, equally. It is the opposite of favoritism or discrimination. Even as adults, many struggle with fairness. They treat others differently because of their looks, their education or their fame. But the most common way they treat other differently is all about money.

This shouldn’t be the case! Listen to what James 2:1-4 says, “My brothers, as believers in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ, don’t show favoritism. Suppose a man comes into your meeting wearing a gold ring and fine clothes, and a poor man in shabby clothes also comes in. If you show special attention to the man wearing fine clothes and say, ‘Here’s a good seat for you,’ but say to the poor man, ‘You stand there’ or ‘Sit on the floor by my feet,’ have you not discriminated among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?”(NIV)

If we follow Jesus, we must be truly fair. We can’t discriminate or show favoritism toward the rich, or the poor!
