Patrick Mahomes is an outstanding quarterback. He plays for the Kansas City Chiefs in the NFL. He’s had a terrific start to his career. He performs amazing no-look or side-arm passes, often scrambling around before connecting with one of his outstanding receivers. He also has a crazy haircut.
I chuckle at all the young boys in our area who’ve gotten their hair cut just like Mahomes. Kids often model themselves after a sports star. If they play baseball, they learn all the batting mannerisms of their favorite player. They kick dirt, tighten their gloves, tap the plate with the bat and hold it over their shoulder, just like the pro does. Hopefully, they also learn the important things like how to properly swing the bat and drive the ball.
Imitating someone is also important spiritually. Hebrews 13:7 says, “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.” (NIV) First, the passage tells us to consider the outcome of their way of life. This is like finding the hitter who has great stats. You want to imitate someone who is successful. Surely you know a leader who has a track record of following Jesus. Watch them.
But more important than watching, is to imitate. But don’t imitate mannerisms, imitate the important thing. Imitate their faith. Learn to trust God the way they do.
