Recently, the news reported that an environmental activist disguised as an old man in a wheelchair, leaped up and smeared cake on the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci called “Mona Lisa.” Well, he didn’t actually touch the painting. The cake smeared across the glass protecting the painting. The glass was installed some years ago following multiple attacks on the painting.
This reminds me of our culture and marriage. Many try to sully marriage or destroy it. Often they disguise their attempts. But activists are not the only ones destroying marriage today. It is often damaged by the attitudes of everyday people who fail to honor it. Listen to Hebrews 13:4, “Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.” (NIV)
The passage uses two words to describe violating the purity of marriage. One word, adulterer, is very specific. It refers to a married person that breaks his or her vows. The other word is more general. It is the source of the English words porn and pornography. It refers to sexual sin and is translated here as “sexually immoral.” Honoring marriage is something all must do. Both those married and those who are single.
No protective glass exists for the masterpiece of marriage. We each must protect it in our attitudes and actions. Honor it by following God’s teaching about sexuality and marriage.
