One of the things I enjoy about museums is they often teach you a little more about a famous person. Some years ago, I toured a museum in London. It was the bunker where Winston Churchill governed Britian during World War II. Seeing the rooms and furnishings, gave me additional insight into Churchill.
In the same way, our virtual museum of faith in Hebrews chapter 11 tells us more about many Bible characters. For example, verses 5-6 says this: “By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God. And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Enoch is not mentioned much in the Bible. His story in Genesis is only five verses! We know who his father was, as well as his son. We know how long he lived and the fact that God took him to heaven without experiencing death.
So what does Hebrews tell us that we didn’t know? That Enoch’s faith was what made him pleasing to God. In fact, he inspires us as an example of faith. We too must be absolutely sure that God exists and rewards those who seek him!
