What is the most spectacular rainbow you have ever seen? I’m not sure I have just one. I’ve seen a lot of rainbows. Some have just been one leg. Others have been the complete arc, vivid and bright against the clouds. I’ve also seen double rainbows – one arch inside the other. The splendor of a rainbow is a special thing.
Did you know that the rainbow is a memorial? It commemorates the promise God made after destroying the earth with a flood. Genesis 9:12-16 says, ‘And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”’ (NIV)
The next time you see a rainbow, be assured that God remembers and keeps his promises. And also marvel at splendor of the oldest memorial we know!
