Have you noticed we use colors to symbolically describe human emotion and mental states? Someone who is “yellow” is deemed a coward. When we’re “blue” we are discouraged or depressed. Someone who is angry is described as “seeing red.” And one who is jealous is said to be “green with envy.”

One of the foundational stories in Genesis is Cain and Abel. It records the first murder in human history, though certainly not the last. Genesis 4:2-5 says, “Now Abel kept flocks, and Cain worked the soil. In the course of time Cain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the LORD. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor. So Cain was very angry, and his face was downcast.” (NIV)

Sound to me like Cain was feeling blue, was green with envy and seeing red — all at the same time! Cain invited his brother out into the field and killed him. When we are angry, we need to remember the words God spoke to Cain in verse 7, “If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.”(NIV)
