Names of God – Mon – 22-11-14

How many names do you have? I have three. I have a given name, a middle name and a sur name or last name. I also had a nickname on the football field of high school, but it hasn’t been used for a long time. Names help identify us.

As we look to God, we learn a lot about him based on the different names used for him in scripture. One of them is found in Genesis 2:4, “This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.” (NIV) This name of God is different than Elohim used in Genesis 1:1. It appears over 6,000 times in Scripture. The King James translates it as “Jehovah,” though the NIV translates it as “LORD God.” This ancient word only appears in the Bible and is used by God as his name. He gave it to Moses to use in case the Israelites wanted to know the name of the God who sent him.

The name highlights that God is unique, uncreated, different. God said this in Exodus 3:14, “God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’ ” (NIV)

God is the ultimate cause for everything that exists. But he had no beginning. He exists as the great I AM.
