Do you like zombie movies? They’ve been around for years. Dead bodies come to life and attack others. In some versions of the genre a disease infects people, transforming them into the living dead. The disease spreads, creating a zombie apocalypse. A similar plot device is used in other films. Rather than create zombies, a contagious disease threatens to kill everyone. But it’s one thing to see a film and another to experience a contagion first hand. Can you imagine being a Hebrew slave in Egypt when the plagues started? It would be one thing to experience water turning to blood or smell massive piles of rotting frogs. But to see people break out in boils, even if you did not, would be sobering.
God used the plagues to free his people, but promised not to inflict them on the Hebrews. Exodus 15:26 says, “If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you.” (NIV)
The phrase “the LORD who heals you” emphasizes God’s sovereignty and power in the medical realm. He inflicted illness on his enemies and kept it from his people. We should remember that God is the LORD who heals. Trust and worship him.
