What is the biggest vacuum cleaner? Oh, I didn’t ask about the best. People can debate about Hoover, Dyson, Bissell, Henry and other brands. They can debate whether canisters or uprights are best. No, I’m talking about the biggest vacuum. You might suggest the biggest is one of those truck-sized vacuums  that suck out the sewers. They’re big alright, but you need to think bigger. Think something the size of the sun.

Ok, technically speaking the sun does not use air to suck up stuff. But it is constantly cleaning the solar system. Its gravity sweeps 100,000 tons of micrometeoroids from the solar system every single day. It also pushes dust out of the solar system through the radiation pressure called the Poynting-Robertson effect.*

The sun is such a good cleaner of the solar system it should be done by now. That is, if the solar system is billions of years old, it should be devoid of dust and micrometeoroids. At the rate the sun cleans, it only needs about 10,000 years to clean everything up. But micrometeoroids still clutter our space and no source to replenish them has been identified. This evidence contradicts the theory that the solar system is billions of years old. It supports the idea that the universe is actually relatively young. This is just one of the many facts that reassures me I have reason to believe in God the creator, and so do you.

Have you driven past a survey crew working along a highway or in your neighborhood? Surveyors use some sophisticated equipment. Lasers determine straight lines and GPS receivers often provide coordinates. It hasn’t always been this way. In the past, they used devices that combined a compass and two metal slits to determine a straight line in a particular direction. Someone peaked through the slits and waved at an assistant to mark a spot. They also dragged chains between markers to measure distance. How did they know they found the right spot to mark the corner of a land tract? Geometry. They worked from one or more known markers to measure where the new marker should be.

History is the same. Whether considering testimony in court or reading historians, facts are confirmed by using multiple sources. How do we know Jesus actually lived? Well, the writers of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John testify to his life. But they are not alone. The Roman historian Tacitus wrote in 112 A.D. that Nero battled the rumor he ordered Rome burned by falsely charging Christians with responsibility. Tacitus explained the origin of Christians in this way, “Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius.”* Ten other ancient writers also mention Jesus, though none provide the account of his life found in the gospel writers.

The fact Jesus walked this earth has been confirmed by multiple sources.

How do we know that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492? Or that Abraham Lincoln was a tall, skinny man with exceptional strength? Or that the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock? Or that Ghengis Khan conquered China? Or that Julius Caesar ruled the Roman empire? We know because people wrote history, recording events and facts.

For centuries, we have relied on people to record history. Some do a good job, truthfully recording events with an acceptable level of editorial comments and spin. Others are less reliable. So, what about the writers of the gospels? Three were eyewitnesses who recorded what they saw and heard. But one was a historian. Luke researched and wrote to record what others experienced of Jesus. How good was he?

He was exceptional. He recorded that Quirinius was governor of Syria at the time of Jesus birth. He said  a census was conducted that required people to travel to their ancestral hometown. Archaeological evidence has confirmed that the Romans conducted a census every 14 years. Archaeology has also confirmed that Quirinius was the governor of Syria twice, about 7 B.C. and then in 6 A.D. A papyrus found in Egypt also details how a Roman census was conducted. It directed people living away from their ancestral homes to return for the enrollment.*

This evidence confirms the care Luke took in recording facts in his gospel. You are reasonable to believe the bible is true.

Did you know that since 1960, millions of dollars have been spent searching for extra-terrestrial intelligence? In 2019 alone, the SETI Institute spent over $23 million.1 How do they search for intelligent life among the stars? Researchers point radio telescopes at the cosmos and listen for signals. If they find patterns that indicate encoded information in the radio signals, they will have found what they’re searching for. So far, they haven’t found any encoded information in cosmic radio sources.

It’s rather ironic, actually. Many have faith intelligent beings will one day be found. Yet many of the same people ignore the encoded information that points to God the creator. The DNA molecule is packed with information. For a human being, 20,000 genes are contained in a DNA molecule. What does DNA do? The National Human Genome Research Institute says, “DNA contains the instructions needed for an organism to develop, survive and reproduce. To carry out these functions, DNA sequences must be converted into messages that can be used to produce proteins, which are the complex molecules that do most of the work in our bodies.”2

People have been searching the heavens for years, believing intelligent life exists. But they’ve found nothing. Yet DNA has vast amounts of information, and many people never see it is evidence that God exists! I guess little green men are easier to believe in even though the evidence all points to the existence of God!

Have you ever seen the theory of evolution supported through radioisotope dating, such as carbon-14 or potassium-40? You see, some elements go through radioactive decay. They slowly convert from one isotope into something else. The rate of decay, called a half-life, is known. Therefore, measuring the amount of one isotope to the other provides a way to estimate the age of the sample. These methods sometimes produce claims that fossils or rock are millions of years old. This may challenge your faith in God.

However, the dating is all based on assumptions. It assumes we know how much of the isotopes were present when the decay started. It also assumes the rate of decay has never changed. And third, it assumes no outside process has changed the amount of isotopes in the sample.

Think of it this way, if the street where you live is wet, it must mean it has rained, right? If that is your conclusion, you are basing it on the assumption the only explanation for the wet street is rain. However, other explanations are possible. The moisture could come from someone watering their lawn, washing their car or from a water main break. A wet road is not enough evidence to say it rained. We usually check the sky and other things to draw that conclusion.

Likewise, don’t believe radioisotope dating without other evidence. These methods once dated lava that flowed between 1949 and 1975 as having formed over 250,000 years ago!*

Believe: Dino Carvings – Sat – 21-11-06

Do you remember the film Jurassic Park? I do. I’d known about Tyrannosaurus Rex. But that film introduced me to Velociraptors. I know it is fiction, but the film made me very thankful that dinosaurs are not living today! Can you imagine going to a wilderness area and having to keep watch to avoid a t-rex? Bears are bad enough!

Evolution tells us that millions of years before humans, dinosaurs became extinct. However, the evidence is not so clear.

Consider the following:*

  1. A Cambodian temple erected in 1186 A.D. – that’s 600 years before any dinosaur fossil dig – has a carving that looks just like a Stegosaurus.
  2. At the Natural Bridges National Monument in Utah, rock carvings and paintings believed to be made by the Anasazi Indians between 500 and 1500 years ago include a painting that looks like a Brontosaurus.
  3. Artifacts from Acambaro, Mexico include hundreds of figurines that are easily identified as Triceratops, Stegosaurus, Iguanodon, Brachiosaurus, and Tyrannosaurus Rex.
  4. In Peru, Inca carvings from 500-1500 A.D. depict pterosaurs, including details like dermal frills or spines. It wasn’t until 1922 that fossil records were discovered of dermal frills. How could ancient Indians depict them, if they’d never seen them?

This evidence strongly suggests that the dates given for humans and dinosaurs in order to support evolution should be viewed with suspicion. I think I’ll just trust the Bible on this topic!

Believe: Rock Layers – Thu – 21-11-04

Have you ever been in a natural history museum or science center and felt your faith challenged? The Bible says God created the earth in six days. Museum displays say animals evolved over millions of years. Where do they get the age for the fossils in the museum? Usually from the age of the rock. How do we get the age of a rock? From the geologic column. Do you remember it from your science textbooks? It was a chart of rock layers. The oldest, lowest rock layer had no fossils. Then layers with simple fossils are on top, followed by other layers with increasingly complex animal fossils. The entire set of layers is called the geologic column.

But you shouldn’t let it challenge your faith. Did you know these facts about the geologic column?*

  1. It does not exist anywhere on earth as depicted in textbooks.
  2. Layers are often missing in nature, for example the Grand Canyon only has half the layers.
  3. Layers are often out of order, supposedly older rock often sits on top of younger rock.
  4. Fossils are found in the wrong layer, occasionally with fossils that are supposed to be separated by hundreds of millions of years.
  5. Fossils are found crossing through layers.

Clearly, the geologic column is not a rock solid way to date fossils! So, enjoy the museum and marvel at the creatures God created!

Believe: The Odds – Tue – 21-11-02

Why should we believe Jesus is from God? There are a lot of reasons. One is fulfilled prophecy. Over 60 different prophecies were made about Jesus, some hundreds of years before his birth. For many, Jesus did not have control over them, such as where he was born, who his ancestors were and how he died. Yet Jesus fulfills the prophecies. Was it just coincidence? Far from it! The odds of Jesus fulfilling just 48 of the prophecies has been calculated. But before we talk about that, we need to understand the number trillion.

Do you know how big a trillion is? It is the favorite number of the current U.S. government for spending. It seems they always want to spend a trillion or two more. So, how much money is a trillion dollars? If you spent a million dollars every day since Jesus was born, you would not yet have spent a trillion dollars!1 A trillion is a big number!

So, now let’s talk about the odds of Jesus fulfilling 48 of the 60 prophecies about him by chance. That number has been calculated as 1 chance in 10 to the 147th power2. That is 1 chance in 10 million, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion, trillion! Talk about a big number! Talk about the odds! Jesus’ fulfillment of prophecy did not happen by chance! God made it happen!

Believe: Witnesses – Fri – 21-06-04

Imagine serving on a jury. You have the testimony of one witness that the defendant committed the crime. Do you convict? Well, maybe. It depends on what you believe about the truthfulness of the witness and his or her motivation. Now, imagine you had the testimony of two or three independent witnesses saying the same thing. I think you’d agree, this makes it easier to convict. The more sources, the more assurance we have the true story.

So what about Jesus? Did he really live? Was he really crucified? Do we only have the testimony of his followers? Actually, we have several non-Christian sources that tell us Jesus lived. All of these sources wrote within 100 years of Jesus’ crucifixion. Here are some of them:

  • Josephus, a Jewish historian, refers to James, “the brother of Jesus, called the Christ.”
  •  Tacitus, a Roman historian, refers to Christ and his crucifixion by Pontius Pilate
  • Suetonius, another Roman historian, wrote about Emperor Claudius expelling Jews from Rome because of disturbances that involved Chrestus, a Latin variant of “Christ.”
  • The Talmud, a Jewish document, refers to Yeshu, a form of the name “Jesus.”
  • Pliny the Younger, a Roman governor ruling in areas that are now Turkey, wrote a letter about those who worship Christus, another Latin variant of “Christ.”

You see, we have more than just two or three non-Christian sources that speak of Jesus. There are eleven. Rest assured, Jesus is real.
