Have you ever marveled at the beauty of butterflies flitting and fluttering about flowers? I enjoy watching them feed on the zinnias outside my office window. I’ve also admired them flying through  butterfly enclosures at parks and museums. But don’t just marvel at their delightful colors and their enchanting flight. The function of their wings is amazing. Their beauty may inspire artists, but their wings can inspire engineers.

An article in Fascinating Creatures, a booklet published by the Institute for Creation Research, describes a 2021 study of butterflies. Scientists analyzed the wing action and aerodynamics of a silver-washed fritilliary. That’s a species of butterfly. They used high-speed cameras to capture images of the butterflies in a wind tunnel. The images collected were subjected to two types of sophisticated analysis, tomographic particle image velocimetry and kinematics.

What did they discover? They found butterflies have an unexpected wing design, different than other insects. The flexible wings form a pocket on the upstroke and force the air out on the downstroke like a miniature jet engine. The puffs of air propel the butterfly forward. Compared to other insects, butterflies have a 22% increase in forceful impulse and a 28% increase in efficiency.*

The complexity of butterfly wings and flight point us to the wisdom of the Creator. They are reasons to believe in God.

Do you like science fiction? Imagine you land on a barren planet in a distant solar system. You plod through the dry, barren landscape and discover a house. You enter and find it warm with a breathable atmosphere. You pull off the helmet of your space suit and notice the furniture fits you, water runs from a tap and a refrigerator stands stocked with food you can eat. Would you conclude this all evolved by chance? Or would you think someone expected you and prepared a place for you? I’d go with the second option. The house is too suited to human needs to conclude otherwise.

Now, think about our planet. It’s like that house. We live on a hospitable planet, perfectly fitted to our needs. Earth is our house in a barren universe.

But that’s not all. The universe itself is finely tuned to allow life to exist. Change any of a number of factors, such as the strength of gravity, and life would not exist. A random value for these factors would result in a universe without life. This evidence points to God, the designer and creator the universe.

This idea is presented in an eight-minute video “Stephen Meyer Shatters the Myth of the Multiverse” on a page at hillfaith.org.* I have placed a link in the show notes. Remember, we are not meaningless specks in a random universe. God prepare a place because he loves us.

Many years ago, I was astounded by what my preschool child said. No, this is not a story of a precocious child uttering a statement beyond his years. Nor is it the story of an innocent, but humorous, conversation. I was astounded because I caught my son in a lie. So began my learning curve as a parent. I had to learn the signs that my children were truthful, or not. Have you been there?

We face a similar problem when we come to the bible. What are the signs it is true? How do we know Matthew, Mark, Luke and John didn’t exaggerate or fabricate things in their accounts? Thankfully, there are multiple signs showing they told the truth. Several are listed in the book I Don’t Have Enough Faith to be an Atheist. Here are three:

  • First, the writers include embarrassing details from their lives. For example, they show they were too dull to understand Jesus. They include times Jesus rebuked them. And they tell of their own cowardice.
  • Second, they included embarrassing details about Jesus. His mother and brothers thought him crazy. He was called a drunkard and demon-possessed. In addition, a prostitute wiped his feet with her hair. Imagine a politician today found in a similar setting!
  • Third, their accounts vary in details. They don’t all include the same things. This matches what you’d expect from eyewitnesses.*

These signs and others show the writers of the New Testament told the truth.

I used to live near a Civil War battlefield in southeastern Missouri. Residents of the county were proud of their history. They pointed to the county courthouse and the patched holes caused by cannon balls from Confederate artillery.

Did you know the ancient Romans had artillery? No, they didn’t have cannons that fired projectiles which exploded. But they did use sophisticated catapults to sling round stones to batter down the city walls of their enemies. Many were about the size of a soccer ball. Recently, archaeologists unearthed these rocks, called ballista, in Jerusalem.*

Why is this important? Jesus predicted the destruction of Jerusalem in Matthew 24:1-2, ‘Jesus left the temple and was walking away when his disciples came up to him to call his attention to its buildings. “Do you see all these things?” he asked. “I tell you the truth, not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.”’ (NIV) Jesus went on to explain the terrible suffering the destruction would bring.

Did it happen? Well, the historian Josephus recorded that Rome besieged Jerusalem in 70 A.D. They focused the assault on the northwest side of the city. Do you know where they found all the ballista stones? The northwest side of the old city walls.

Once again archaeology has confirmed biblical events. But it is more interesting, than that. Archaeology confirms the account of a non-biblical historian. And both confirm the events predict by Jesus occurred.

Take a moment and place your hand over your heart. Do you feel it beating? Do you know what a marvel your heart is?  In a YouTube video called “The Miracle of the Human Heart Explained by Biologist Michael Denton”* we learn the following:

  • Your heart started beating while you were still in the womb. It beats every second. By the time you reach 80 years old, it will beat two billion times.
  • The cells that compose the heart are special. They resist fatigue and contract autonomously without external control.
  • With each beat the heart moves 100 billion red blood cells through hundreds of kilometers of capillaries. Each red blood cell carries oxygen molecules to the cells of the body, providing the energy for life.
  • It took four centuries of diligent study to understand how the heart and lungs work. They are examples of bioengineering fine-tuned to deliver energy throughout the body.
  • But they would be useless without the fine-tuning of the earth’s environment. In order for the heart and lungs to deliver oxygen, sunlight must reach the surface of the planet. Through photosynthesis, plants must  be present to produce oxygen. Water, which forms the basis of blood, must be the right viscosity. If it were thicker or thinner, our blood would be useless. And transition metals must be present to carry and convert oxygen in the body.

Thump, thump, thump. Your heart declares the glory of God who designed it.

Reasons to Believe – Tue – 22-10-04

Have you ever been told something you absolutely believed was false? Of course, you have. We all have been lied to, some of us more than others. Such experiences leave us skeptical of other people. We hear something outlandish and we refuse to believe. We exclaim, “No way” and shake our heads.

Some people react that way when told about a miracle. They simply don’t believe miracles exist. Maybe you’ve heard someone say something like, “if I don’t see it with my own eyes, I’ll never believe it.” They pooh pooh the idea of Jesus walking on water, feeding the five thousand or rising from the dead.

But I don’t need to see something happen to believe it actually happened. Take the explosion of the volcano Krakatoa in 1883. I didn’t see it, but I believe it when told it was four times more powerful than the largest nuclear device ever detonated. I can see the effects of the event, even if I didn’t see it happen.

The same is true of miracles. If God exists, then miracles can happen. I don’t need to see them, their after effects are present. Take the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. History tells us people died in the arenas of Rome for their belief in it. The resurrection powered Christianity and changed the Roman world. It was a world altering event.

But more important is the fact the resurrection validated the message of Jesus and proved he is God’s son.

Do you like puzzles? At our house, the puzzles come out around the winter holidays. Pieces are sorted and assembled, often over multiple hours or days.  Some puzzles are quick. Others are difficult because of the multiple shades of color used across the picture. But persistence eventually finds the place for every piece and the picture is complete.

Archaeology is much the same. Artifacts are unearthed including building foundations, pottery shards, ancient tools, and coins. They are the puzzle pieces studied to see a picture of the past. Archaeology has validated the bible’s historical accuracy on numerous occasions. And that validation continues today.

In August of this year, a team of archaeologists excavated a fifth-to-sixth century Byzantine basilica at the el Araj archaeological site on the shores of the Sea of Galilee in Israel. They uncovered a large Greek mosaic that bolsters the theory the church was built over the home of the apostles Peter and Andrew. Steven Notley, professor of New Testament and Christian Origins at Nyack University and co-leader of the expedition, called the basilica’s mosaic the “most definitive archaeological connection with Peter.” According to Notley, the mosaic is more than 1,500 years old. He also believes it is compelling evidence that the excavation has discovered the town of Bethsaida. *

With a puzzle, when most of the pieces are assembled, you can tell what the picture is. Archaeology has pieced so much of the past together we can see the bible is true.

Reasons to Believe – Sun – 22-10-02

The days are getting shorter and cooler. Have you noticed? But it was a long, hot summer. I am so thankful for air conditioning. Let’s face it. Most of us are comfortable in a very narrow range of temperatures. Oh, we may push the thermostat up or down a few degrees, but not far.

This fact reminds me of a video on YouTube entitled “The Wonder of Water.”* It explains how water is absolutely critical for the existence of life. One reason is water’s unique thermal properties. Water can absorb tremendous amounts of heat without much increase in its own temperature. For example, the sidewalk on a hot summer day can burn bare feet. But feet dipped into a pool of water on the same blistering day will find cool comfort. How can a sidewalk and water in the same sunshine have such different temperatures? Because the water absorbs the heat without getting as hot.

This property of water is special. Water absorbs more heat at normal temperatures and pressures than any other liquid. It allows our bodies to cool themselves through sweat evaporating into the air. And since human beings are relatively hairless, this benefits people more than any animal. It allows us to continue to exert ourselves through more of the hot hours of the day.

Water is tuned to life and we are tuned to take advantage of it. Just one more reason to believe God designed it all.

What is the biggest vacuum cleaner? Oh, I didn’t ask about the best. People can debate about Hoover, Dyson, Bissell, Henry and other brands. They can debate whether canisters or uprights are best. No, I’m talking about the biggest vacuum. You might suggest the biggest is one of those truck-sized vacuums  that suck out the sewers. They’re big alright, but you need to think bigger. Think something the size of the sun.

Ok, technically speaking the sun does not use air to suck up stuff. But it is constantly cleaning the solar system. Its gravity sweeps 100,000 tons of micrometeoroids from the solar system every single day. It also pushes dust out of the solar system through the radiation pressure called the Poynting-Robertson effect.*

The sun is such a good cleaner of the solar system it should be done by now. That is, if the solar system is billions of years old, it should be devoid of dust and micrometeoroids. At the rate the sun cleans, it only needs about 10,000 years to clean everything up. But micrometeoroids still clutter our space and no source to replenish them has been identified. This evidence contradicts the theory that the solar system is billions of years old. It supports the idea that the universe is actually relatively young. This is just one of the many facts that reassures me I have reason to believe in God the creator, and so do you.

Have you driven past a survey crew working along a highway or in your neighborhood? Surveyors use some sophisticated equipment. Lasers determine straight lines and GPS receivers often provide coordinates. It hasn’t always been this way. In the past, they used devices that combined a compass and two metal slits to determine a straight line in a particular direction. Someone peaked through the slits and waved at an assistant to mark a spot. They also dragged chains between markers to measure distance. How did they know they found the right spot to mark the corner of a land tract? Geometry. They worked from one or more known markers to measure where the new marker should be.

History is the same. Whether considering testimony in court or reading historians, facts are confirmed by using multiple sources. How do we know Jesus actually lived? Well, the writers of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John testify to his life. But they are not alone. The Roman historian Tacitus wrote in 112 A.D. that Nero battled the rumor he ordered Rome burned by falsely charging Christians with responsibility. Tacitus explained the origin of Christians in this way, “Christus, the founder of the name, was put to death by Pontius Pilate, procurator of Judea in the reign of Tiberius.”* Ten other ancient writers also mention Jesus, though none provide the account of his life found in the gospel writers.

The fact Jesus walked this earth has been confirmed by multiple sources.

How do we know that Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492? Or that Abraham Lincoln was a tall, skinny man with exceptional strength? Or that the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock? Or that Ghengis Khan conquered China? Or that Julius Caesar ruled the Roman empire? We know because people wrote history, recording events and facts.

For centuries, we have relied on people to record history. Some do a good job, truthfully recording events with an acceptable level of editorial comments and spin. Others are less reliable. So, what about the writers of the gospels? Three were eyewitnesses who recorded what they saw and heard. But one was a historian. Luke researched and wrote to record what others experienced of Jesus. How good was he?

He was exceptional. He recorded that Quirinius was governor of Syria at the time of Jesus birth. He said  a census was conducted that required people to travel to their ancestral hometown. Archaeological evidence has confirmed that the Romans conducted a census every 14 years. Archaeology has also confirmed that Quirinius was the governor of Syria twice, about 7 B.C. and then in 6 A.D. A papyrus found in Egypt also details how a Roman census was conducted. It directed people living away from their ancestral homes to return for the enrollment.*

This evidence confirms the care Luke took in recording facts in his gospel. You are reasonable to believe the bible is true.
