Did you ever want to be a superhero? My brother and I were once fascinated with Batman and Robin. We ran about as the dynamic duo with towels tied around our necks like capes. Usually this was immediately after drying off from our bath! We’d race down the hall, leap on our beds and traded capes for pajamas. Superheroes also sell a lot of comic books. I admired Spiderman and bought a few issues. Does your fascination with superheroes continue as an adult? Perhaps the Marvel movies in recent years increased your desire to be an Avenger. I mean, who wouldn’t want a shield like Captain America?
Well, we can’t be superheroes. But we do have a shield. In the description of spiritual armor needed for life, Paul says in Ephesians 6:16, “In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one.” (NIV)
In life, the evil one constantly fires barbs at us. His goal is to use a small flame and ignite our lives in chaos. Do you feel flaming arrows flying at you or that everything is burning and your dreams are going up in smoke? Consider the shield of faith. Notice it doesn’t deflect the arrows. No, Paul says it extinguishes them. They strike, but fail to spread flame because we trust God. Faith in Jesus is far better than Captain America’s shield!
