Armor of God – Wed – 22-06-29

Have you ever stepped on a sticker? There are different types of stickers. Cockleburs can be half the size of your thumb and covered in spines. But they are pretty easy to see on the ground and avoid. Sand burs are small. I picked a lot out of my socks as a kid. I also stepped on a few. They stung, but they were nothing like goathead stickers. These hard, spiney seeds from a ground hugging plant are about the size of a pencil eraser. The sticker looks like a miniature goat head. They can stab bare feet. In fact, another name for goatheads is puncturevine. I learned at an early age to wear shoes where goatheads grow.

Protecting the feet is important in battle. Today’s infantry soldier wears combat boots. If your feet are injured, you usually can’t complete your mission. Ephesians 6:15 describes part of the spiritual armor we should wear. It says we should have “feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.” (NIV) It means we must be ready to march on our mission to spread the message about Jesus.

I think one of the biggest challenges for followers of Jesus in today’s culture is to stay on mission. So many things distract us. We can easily expend ourselves fighting the wrong battles. We hop around and howl like stepping on a sticker. Instead, we must focus on being ready to spread the peace that Jesus provides.
