Can you imagine how useful it would be to know the future? In the Back to the Future movies from the 1980s, Marty and Doc travel back and forth through time. This gives them the ability to know certain events before they happen. On several occasions their knowledge helps them avoid problems, at others it complicates the plot. For example, Marty knows Doc will be shot in the current time and warns Doc while in the past to prevent it. They also bring knowledge about the timing of a lightning strike into the past and use it to power their time machine. It’s all good fun, though very unrealistic.
But some knowledge of the future is possible. Ephesians 1:9-10 says “And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment–to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.” (NIV)
What a blessing to know the plans of God. Today, we know details of God’s plan that were hidden in the past. We also know the plan for the future, which is to bring all things under the Lordship of Jesus. We don’t know the timing, but we can be assured God will accomplish it. God has blessed us with knowledge that once was hidden.
