Favorite OT Character – Mon – 21-08-09

Have you heard of Benaiah the son of Jehoiada? He is my favorite character in the Old Testament. He was a highly decorated warrior, renowned for bravery. Here’s how 2 Samuel 23:20-21 describes him, “Benaiah son of Jehoiada, a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, performed great exploits. He struck down Moab’s two mightiest warriors. He also went down into a pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. And he struck down a huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and killed him with his own spear.” (NIV)

We’re also told that Benaiah served King David as the captain of his body guard. He was an excellent choice! He was faithful to the king and quick to obey. Near the end of David’s life, many of the government officials were supporting a rival to David’s heir, Solomon. They were in the process of declaring Adonijah king. It was Benaiah who stood firm with David. He was entrusted with the coronation of Solomon. David also charged him with executing the rival. The story is told in the first two chapters of 1 Kings.

That’s what I like about Benaiah. Yes, he was a brave hero. But more importantly, he was faithful to his king. I hope that I am as faithful to my king, Jesus. Don’t you want to be like Benaiah, too?
