I love my smart phone. But, I must admit, at times I also hate it. Or rather, I hate some of the apps on it always clamoring for attention with notifications! As if it is just as important to know about a breaking storm warning as the latest offer from the ice cream shop.

I remember an old booklet called The Tyranny of the Urgent by Charles Hummel. Hummel noted that we focus on things that demand attention now. In so doing, we often fail to do things that are important, but not urgent.

I think there is another danger as well. We often miss the fact that some critically important things are also urgent. They need attention now. Consider the words of 2 Corinthians 5:20 – 6:2: “We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. For he says, ‘In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.’ I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation.” (NIV)

So, don’t forget to take action now, because it is the day of salvation!
