1st Peter 1 – Thu – 23-02-23

As a child, I received a beautiful, white, hollow body electric guitar and a Gretsch amp. I was excited. But when I tried to wrap my fingers around the neck in weird configurations to form chords, I became discouraged. I wanted to be a guitar player, but struggled to do it.

Maybe you’ve felt the same way as a Christian. I Peter 1:15-16 says, ‘But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”’ (NIV 1984) Have you felt discouraged by this verse? Do you find it difficult to live a holy life?

Or maybe you feel apathetic. You believe holiness is next to impossible for you, so you shrug your shoulders and ignore the command. Then some of us may feel frustrated. Why would God ask us to do something so difficult? But all of these feelings are tragic.

When you hear God say “Be holy, because I am holy” you should be excited. God didn’t say you needed to be perfect. We don’t lose salvation when we fail. He charged us to be separate and special as he is. Our behavior, attitudes and values must be like his, not the world’s. And here’s the best part. He has given us his Holy Spirit to transform us. And just like my fingers eventually learned to play the guitar, we will become holy like Him.

Names of God – Sat – 22-11-19

Have you ever wanted to be special? Kids often dream of being special in some way. Boys imagine themselves throwing the touchdown pass that wins a Superbowl. Or they dream of closing out game seven of the World Series, or perhaps slamming a walk-off homer against the upper deck. Girls may dream of winning a beauty pageant or starring in the movies. Boys and girls both may dream of being rock stars or business tycoons or becoming President of the United States. These are all grandiose dreams. Sometimes we just want to be special by being part of a group at school. Maybe it is the academically talented group or the student government. Sometimes we just want to be accepted in the group of popular students.

Did you know that God makes you special? He is called “the LORD, who makes you holy” in Exodus 31:13. In fact, the Israelites were to observe the Sabbath as a sign that God made them holy.

Being holy is a form of being special. In fact, it goes beyond special. It means being separate or different, set apart for a purpose. God still makes his people holy today. He provides his Spirit to transform our lives.  1 Peter 1:15-16 tells us ‘But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”’ (NIV) We worship the God who makes us holy.
