1st John 1 – Tue – 23-01-10

Have you ever talked to someone who claimed to know a celebrity? They drop the name in a casual conversation. You talk about a sports star and they pipe up with “Oh, I know him. We played golf yadda yadda yadda.” Or you discuss a political figure and they say something like, “You know we worked together on such and such a thing.” People also claim to know famous actors and singers.

I don’t know about you, but I tend to be skeptical about such claims. If there’s more evidence of the relationship, I’ll believe them. Or if I know the person well enough to know they are truthful. But I’m usually skeptical. I don’t challenge the person to prove their claim. I just quietly listen.

Then there are people who claim to know God. The apostle John had them in mind when he wrote 1 John 1:6, “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.” (NIV)

Those are pretty harsh words. But John is correct. People can’t have fellowship with God if they walk in darkness. God is light. In him there is absolutely no darkness. So, you can’t have a relationship with him if your life meanders through sin. But thankfully, God can deal with our sin so that we can know him through Jesus.
