One Another – Mon – 22-04-04

Do you have an anemic understanding of fellowship? Typically, we only use the term in reference to eating together, as in “fellowship meal,” “fellowship dinner” or “fellowship hall” where such dinners are held. But the concept is much stronger. It talks about the common bond between those who share a purpose and share life. Think of the film The Fellowship of the Ring. Frodo and his companions were bound together by a common purpose – the destruction of the ring. They traveled together, fought for and supported each other. Their bond was much stronger than simply eating together!

Or listen to the use of the word fellowship in 1 John 1:5-7, “This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (NIV)

Our fellowship with one another is based on Jesus’ sacrifice. It requires us to live by the truth. We share a bond, a mission and the one Lord, Jesus Christ. So, how should we treat each other because of this fellowship? With the dedication and camaraderie of teammates or soldiers. That’s fellowship!
