Judges – Sun – 22-02-20

The board game Trivial Pursuit became popular decades ago. Then team trivia events, or trivia nights, became popular as well. So, how are your trivia skills. Here’s a question for you. In the bible, name the left-handed judge.

Do you know the answer? Ehud was the left-handed judge. Unlike judges in our government, the ancient Israelite judge didn’t just settle disputes. They were military leaders as well. Ehud delivered his country from oppression by a fat king, by killing him with a sword. Since he was left-handed, he hid it on his person in a place the guards didn’t expect.

After killing the king, Ehud stepped out and told the guards the king was relieving himself. Judges 3:26-28 picks up the story, “While they [i.e. the guards] waited, Ehud got away. He passed by the idols and escaped to Seirah. When he arrived there, he blew a trumpet in the hill country of Ephraim, and the Israelites went down with him from the hills, with him leading them.
‘Follow me,’ he ordered, ‘for the LORD has given Moab, your enemy, into your hands.’” (NIV)

I imagine it was easy to follow Ehud into battle, since he had already killed the enemy’s king.

In the same way, we can have great confidence following Jesus. Because he has already defeated the enemy of death. As 1 Corinthians 15:57 says, “But thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (NIV)
