Jesus’ Identity – Wed – 23-04-05

Prove it. Did you ever hear those words issued as a challenge? Prove it. Or, as they say in Missouri, show me. If you make claims about your toughness or ability on the playground, someone will challenge you to prove it, to put your money where your mouth is, to back it up with action. I remember guys in high school bragging about how fast their cars were. Eventually, someone would challenge them and they would line up on the black top road north of town and hold a drag race. Revving engines, squealing tires and the fastest car through the quarter mile proved which claim was true.

What about the claims that Jesus is God’s Son? Dare we say “prove it”? We really don’t need to. Listen to John 3:1-2, ‘Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a member of the Jewish ruling council. He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi, we know you are a teacher who has come from God. For no one could perform the miraculous signs you are doing if God were not with him.”’ (NIV 1984)

Nicodemus didn’t ask Jesus to prove who he was. He said that God had already proven who Jesus was. The miracles performed by Jesus proved he came from God. God claimed Jesus was his Son, and he proved it with miracle after miracle. God, backed up his words with action.
