Song of Ascents – Thu – 23-03-09

If. That’s an important word, right? We look back on life and say things like “What if . . .” Sometimes we bemoan missed opportunities and say “If only I had . . . done whatever it was I didn’t do.” But a more productive thought is to think of something wonderful and say “What if that had not happened to me.”

I can think that way. If I had not married Elaine, I would have missed having three wonderful children. If I had not taken one job offer, my career would have struggled. And if I hadn’t followed Jesus, where would I be today?

Listen to Psalms 124:1-8:
If the LORD had not been on our side–let Israel say–
if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us,
when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive;
the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us,
the raging waters would have swept us away.
Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth.
We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler’s snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped.
Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.
(NIV 1984)

Now, take a moment to think about what your life would be like without the Lord, then give him thanks.
