Do you like to sing while you walk? I suppose a few people do. But most people I know will talk to companions or walk in silence. If they make any music while strolling, it would be to hum or whistle. I suppose people may sing along to whatever is playing through their earbuds. But walking is rarely a musical exercise.
The ancient Jews did sing special songs while walking, called Songs of Ascents. Either the people sang them as they climbed into the temple on religious holidays, or the temple staff sang them. Listen to one of these songs from Psalms 120:1-7:
“I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me.
Save me, O LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues.
What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue?
He will punish you with a warrior’s sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree.
Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar!
Too long have I lived among those who hate peace.
I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war.”
(NIV 1984)
This song teaches us to worship God, even in distressful times. Do you find people arguing and attacking while you just want to live at peace? If so, don’t skip the worship of God.
