Why do people think mockery is humor? We all laugh at it. Media personalities mock politicians. This is especially true of talk show hosts and the casts of late-night comedy shows. People also mock one another in the office, at the factory and on social media. Mocking is more than a joke. It ridicules another, displaying contempt for the person or their position. I’m not talking about good-natured teasing. We poke fun at each other all the time. Mockery goes beyond teasing. It temps others to laugh in derision. Respect is absent from mockery.
A sure sign you’ve spotted a fool is finding someone mocking certain things. Proverbs 14:9 says, “Fools mock at making amends for sin, but goodwill is found among the upright.” (NIV 1984)
You see, good people treat others with respect and goodwill. If they offend someone, they make amends. But fools scoff at the idea they have been wrong. They sarcastically imitate those they offend, accusing them of being overly sensitive or something worse. Fools also mock the concept that Jesus makes amends for their sins or anyone’s.
Learn from this verse to spread goodwill. Guard yourself against mocking others.
