What do you picture when you hear the word folly? Maybe you see the court jester of medieval times, complete with a hat with two or three points, each sporting a bell. We often think of folly as entertaining foolishness, jokes and stunts with no real harm. You may think of the silliness of some Youtube videos or late night comics.
But the word folly has a more sinister meaning in Proverbs which corresponds to an archaic definition of the word. Wickedness. The folly of fools depicted in the book of Proverbs not only lacks sense, it harms self and others. It is wickedness. Listen to Proverbs 14:8, “The wisdom of the prudent is to give thought to their ways, but the folly of fools is deception.” (NIV 1984) In other words, fools promote things that are not true. They mislead, distract and conceal things. They don’t consider whether their actions are good or not.
Deception is evil. Some of the greatest deceptions of history resulted in the death and abuse of millions. Hitler launched the Holocaust with false ideas about the Jews. Africans were sold and abused as slaves and then mistreated when freed. Why? False ideas about their inferiority.
One way to spot fools is to spot those concealing thing, distracting people and promoting false ideas. With that definition, I’m sure you’ve noticed many fools. Remember, consider your ways and avoid deceiving others.
