Happy Valentine’s Day! Did you purchase something for your loved one? It was estimated that people would spend nearly $24 billion in 2022 on Valentine’s Day. Roughly half the adult population planned to celebrate. I’m sure you can guess what the most popular gifts were. That’s right, candy, greeting cards and flowers. Roughly a third of adults planned to spend an evening out celebrating the day.*
Perhaps you’re wondering how Valentine’s Day fits into the week’s theme of Proverbs about fools. I looked, but didn’t find any proverbs that said a fool skips or forgets Valentine’s Day. But, just the same, I don’t recommend it.
What I did find was the challenge to love wisdom. The book is addressed to the writer’s son. It personifies wisdom and encourages the son to pursue her like a good woman. Listen to Proverbs 4:6-9, “Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding. Esteem her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you. She will set a garland of grace on your head and present you with a crown of splendor.” (NIV 1984)
Enjoy Valentine’s Day. Display your affection for your loved one. But also give devotion to learning and following God’s teaching. Love wisdom.
