Finding Fools – Mon – 23-02-13

I sometimes poke around on the Google Trends site. It provides data on the popularity of search terms entered into Google’s search engine. Did you know the most popular search term in 2022 was wordle? Of course election results was number two followed by Betty White and Queen Elizabeth. I don’t know whether to be reassured wordle was number one or not.

The site also provides data on the region where a term is popular. For example, at one point early in 2022, the term fool was a highly popular search in Washington D.C. But its popularity decreased over the year.

The book of Proverbs was written to provide instruction to make one wise. But this week, I thought we’d flip the playbook. Rather than focus on wisdom, we are looking at fools. Proverbs has a lot to say about fools. None of it flattering. All of it a warning. One passage is Proverbs 1:32-33, “For the waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them; but whoever listens to me will live in safety and be at ease, without fear of harm.” (NIV 1984)

A definition for complacency is “smug satisfaction with an existing condition while unaware of potential danger.” Let me paraphrase that. You can spot a fool because they smugly believe they know best. They don’t listen to God’s instruction. Don’t be foolish. Listen to God’s word and follow it.
