1st John 1 – Wed – 23-01-11

I claim to be married to Elaine. It is something you can test. A lot of evidence exists. Pictures of our wedding, rings on our fingers, the testimony of people who attended the ceremony. Then there are the decades of joint tax returns, the marriage license and the records in the county courthouse. My claim of marriage can be verified.

In the early part of 1st  John, the apostle gives us ways to verify whether or not we have a relationship with God. One line of evidence is the conduct of our lives. 1 John 1:6-7 says, “If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth.  But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” (NIV)

In these verses the phrases “live by the truth” and “walk in the light” parallel each other. People who claim a relationship with God, but live outside his truth, are lying. When we trust in Jesus’ blood to purify us from sin, we will walk in the light. The manner of our life will bear witness of our fellowship with God.

Today, live with the joy declared by the old hymn, which says, “How beautiful to walk in the steps of the Savior, stepping in the light.”
