Imagine Growth – Sat – 23-01-07

I used to love January. Well, let me correct that. I loved what I got in the mail in January. Today’s internet world has taken away the joy of receiving a garden seed catalog. Do you remember them? The cover enticed you with full color pictures of bright red tomatoes, golden ears of corn, green pea pods and luscious strawberries. If the company also handled fruit trees, the back cover glistened with images of ripe peaches, apples and pears. When we lived in northern Michigan, the catalog provided the hope of spring in the deep snow of January. I flipped through the pages to imagine summer’s produce.

When spring came, we tilled the garden, added compost or manure and planted the seeds. That’s all we could do until they sprouted. Then we weeded, hoed and watered. Isn’t growing a garden amazing? Paul used gardening and farming as an illustration in 1 Corinthians 3:6-7, “I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God made it grow. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.” (NIV)

As with a garden seed, so spiritual growth. We can no more cause a plant to grow than we can cause our own spiritual growth, or the growth of another. We can only plant the seed, pull weeds and water. But imagine the spiritual growth God can produce in you this year.
