The Gospel – Wed – 22-12-14

The new fad on social media is short videos, often called reels. I often stop and watch some woodworking project. But recently I watched a reel of a man jumping off a cliff without a parachute. Yes, I stopped scrolling to watch. As he hurtled toward certain death in the valley below, I noticed he was fastened to a cable. The other end was attached to the cliff several yards from his launch point. Before the man hit the ground, the cable straightened and he swung back up to safety. It must have been a thrilling ride.

The book of Romans is like this. It tells us the bad news before pivoting to the good news. The pivot point is Romans 3:21-24, “But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.” (NIV)

To this point in Romans, Paul hammers home the fact we are subject to God’s wrath because of sin. Even these verses highlight that all have sinned. But these verses swing us back to the good news. God provides righteousness through faith in Jesus. He removes our guilt freely. This is the thrill of the gospel.
