The Gospel – Mon – 22-12-12

Does watching or reading the news leave you in a bad mood? Bad news attracts our attention, doesn’t it? And the good news about Jesus actually begins with bad news. In fact, we’ll never understand God’s good news unless we understand the bad news first.

Paul lays it out in Romans 1:18-20, “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.”

The bible teaches that sinful people will be cast into a lake of fire by God. In fact, we can think of some really wicked people that deserve this punishment, can’t we? But, what is the basic sin that condemns so many of us? The next verse explains, “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him.“ (v. 21 NIV)

Did you catch it? Yes, axe murders will face God’s wrath. But so will those who simply ignore God. We are all without excuse. The bad news about God’s wrath is where the good news of Jesus begins. We should be ashamed about our behavior, but not about God’s offer of righteousness through faith.
