Do you remember this little ditty from childhood? “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me.” Children learn it to deflect the insults of other children.
I don’t know how old it is. Sticks and stones were the original weapons people used to attack each other. But those weapons evolved, didn’t they. We graduated to contraptions to throw rocks and sling sticks armed with rocks. The contraptions got better, throwing things larger and farther. Then gunpowder changed everything. That is, until thermonuclear bombs changed everything again. Compared to rocks and sticks, atom bombs are in a completely different class.
This reminds me of God. He is in a class by himself. One of his names highlight this. Genesis 14:18-20 uses it a couple of times. It reads, ‘Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, and he blessed Abram, saying, “Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. And blessed be God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.’ (NIV)
The phrase “God Most High” declares that nothing compares to God. Nothing is greater, higher or better than he. It is similar to comparing A-bombs with rocks and sticks. There is just no comparison. Today, place your trust in the God Most High who created the cosmos and can deliver you.
