Marks of Disciples – Wed – 22-10-12

Where would we be without the ability to measure things? Recipes provide specific instructions on the amount of ingredients to combine, the order of steps and the cooking temperatures. At a health checkup, measurements of blood pressure, height and weight are taken. Though we usually don’t like those results.

So, what about disciples of Jesus? Does a measurement exist that verifies someone is a disciple? Well, maybe. Listen to Jesus in John 15:5-8, “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.” (NIV)

This passage indicates bearing much fruit reveals the disciples of Jesus. In other words, we can’t simply be consumers of Jesus. We must become producers for Jesus. If we are connected to him, his Spirit and love will flow through us to produce much fruit. Take a look at yourself. If you are only a consumer of spiritual things you need to refresh your connection to Jesus.
