I’m a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs. I often watch their games on TV. I probably know more about the Cardinals. We keep up on the new players from the minors, who’s on the injured list and player stats. I also have more Cards shirts and hats than Chiefs wear.
But I am not a fan of Jesus. Oh, don’t get me wrong. I love Jesus. But my relationship with him is far more than being a fan. I am a follower, a disciple. You probably see yourself the same way, right? So how do we distinguish ourselves as followers of Jesus? Do we just wear religious shirts like we do for our sports teams?
Well, that’s ok, but it’s not enough. We need to think bigger. This week, we’re examining Jesus’ words for the distinctive marks of his disciples. One of those marks is found in John 13:34-35. Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (NIV)
Loving others is the mark of Jesus’ disciples. Fans of Jesus may wear a religious t-shirt. But followers of Jesus do much more. They take action to love others the way Jesus loves us. So what loving action will you take today?
