Do you follow a person or sports team on social media? It’s easy to do, just click. Perhaps it is too easy.
When people hear about following Jesus, do they equate it with following a Twitter personality? Do they mentally subscribe to his word as a past time? Do they choose to pay attention to him as one voice in a stream of others, occasionally interacting with him through prayer or worship? If you think this is what it means to follow Jesus, you’ve got it all wrong.
Hear what Jesus said in Mark 8:34-38, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father’s glory with the holy angels.” (NIV)
Jesus tells us following him is an absolute priority, not a past time. Our loyalty to him means surrendering our own interests, even our own life. Jesus doesn’t want to be included in the feed of your life. He wants to be your life.
