Have you ever received counterfeit money? I haven’t, probably because I usually don’t carry 50 and 100 dollar bills. Counterfeiting can be a big problem. And it’s not just counterfeit money you have to watch out for. Some also sell fake items like purses, dresses and electronics. I have a friend who visited China several years ago. She was delighted to purchase an iPhone at a greatly reduced price. You guessed it. It was fake and didn’t work when she returned to the States.
To combat the problem of counterfeits, many products display some type of seal to verify authenticity. Sometimes it’s stamp or a fancy foil seal. Embossed seals are pressed into paper. Perhaps the fanciest are plastic, multi-colored seals that produce a holographic image.
One of the spiritual blessings followers of Jesus enjoy is being marked with a seal. Listen to Ephesians 1:13-14, “And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession–to the praise of his glory.” (NIV)
More than a seal of authenticity, the Holy Spirit guarantees our eternal life. Just as earnest money shows commitment to purchase real estate, the Holy Spirit living in us is God’s commitment to our ultimate redemption.
