Blessings In Christ – Tue – 22-09-13

The day before I wrote this, I attended a celebration of life for two dear friends. We worked with Doc and Kathy decades ago to start a church. They also encouraged us tremendously during an intense time of grief. Covid took Doc and Kathy within a couple of days of each other last winter. At the service, their children and others told stories about them. Many were funny. Many highlighted their care for others and willingness to fight for what was right. Their son commented that for several years he took his loving parents for granted. But he came to realize the blessing they were to him.

We also need to realize what a blessing we have being the children of God. Ephesians 1:5-6 says that God, in his love, “predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will– to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.” (NIV)

People often focus on the word predestined in these verses, launching questions or deep theological discussions about how God does this. But the words of impact are these: adopted as his sons. You see, God chose us to be his children, to be his heirs. He willed it, and it pleased him. What a tremendous blessing to be children of God by his grace given through Jesus.
