Do you remember picking sides for games on the playground. Two captains faced the line of hopeful children, selecting team members in turn. As you stood in the line you longed to be picked and picked first. That showed your value. Nobody wanted to be picked last. The last person wasn’t really picked. No choice remained. The face of the captain forced to take the last child said it all. Oh how different and how good it felt to be one of the first picked.
Ephesians 1:4 lists the first spiritual blessing we have in Jesus. It reads, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.” (NIV)
Did you hear that? God has selected us to be part of his family. Not only have we been picked, but it was early. God chose us before he created the world. We’re not the left overs that God has to take because the choices are gone. God chose us early.
Not only are we chosen, but we have been chosen for something good – to be holy and blameless in his sight. We were not picked to be the water boy or equipment manager. God chose us to be holy as he is holy. What a tremendous blessing to know that God values us and loves us so much he chose us before creating the world.
