People are all different. We come in different sizes, shapes and colors. We all have different talents. As a teen, I realized some had better athletic skills than I did. They ran faster or shot the ball better. In other things, I was better than most. These differences in ability are a fact of life.
For followers of Jesus, we are also given abilities through God’s spirit. These are not natural talents. They are a gift that allows us to serve in Christ’s church. Romans 12:6-8 describes some of these gifts. It reads, “We have different gifts, according to the grace given us. If a man’s gift is prophesying, let him use it in proportion to his faith. If it is serving, let him serve; if it is teaching, let him teach; if it is encouraging, let him encourage; if it is contributing to the needs of others, let him give generously; if it is leadership, let him govern diligently; if it is showing mercy, let him do it cheerfully.” (NIV)
Did you notice the gift of encouragement? We all have the responsibility to encourage each other in Jesus. But some have a special ability to encourage others. The biblical character Joseph from Cyprus was probably one. He was so good at encouraging others, everyone used his nickname, Barnabas, which means “son of encouragement.”
Take the time to encourage others. You may discover you have a gift for it.
